National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)

In 1968, Congress created the NFIP to provide homeowners, renters, and business owners with a means to protect their homes and belongings. If your property is in an NFIP participating community, you may qualify for insurance through the federal government.

In the event of a flood, your NFIP policy covers direct physical losses to your home’s structure and belongings. The NFIP offers building coverage and contents coverage to protect your home and belongings. These policies typically have maximum coverage of $250,000 for the structure of your home and $100,000 for your possessions.

Private Flood Insurance

Private insurance is a viable alternative to buying a government-backed policy under the NFIP. Therefore, this option receives no backing from the federal government. In many cases, it can provide you higher coverage options for the structure of your home and its contents from water damage caused by a flood.
